I’m in the hospital for 3 days!

I wasn’t eating enough and yesterday I wouldn’t walk at all. Mommy called the vet (Dr. A, the good guy). He took me off all meds but the antibiotic and said to call in the morning. When mommy called, she and Dr. A agreed that I needed to go in for blood work. I am in kidney failure, even though my blood work was great at my senior checkup in July and my pre op blood work was clean, too. Dr. A says I have a 50/50 chance of pulling through this. My mommy refuses to believe that this is anything other than a complication from surgery. Mommy not believing I had cancer worked, and my lymph nodes were clean. Mommy will pull this one off, too. I have a little infection by where they did the surgery, one of the vets massaged it and got some pus to come out of my drain. I will feel better once that clears up. The vet is keeping me on IV fluids for 3 days. I will be feeling a lot better on Saturday, my kidney levels will be back to normal, and I will be going home.

I have a big fight in me because I was named after a great warrior, so I will fight this and win. I did put up a fight when they took my temperature and my blood. Mommy thinks that’s a good sign.

When mommy called at 6 to check on me, the vet on duty (Dr. P), told her that I am doing well and I walked and went potty like a good girl.

I'm an 8 year old Rotti, who has a mass in my left, rear leg, right where I got TTA surgery 3 years ago. This leg is literally a pain in my butt. It will be amputated on Tuesday. Mommy says that a week from today I will be feeling much better. I'm a little scared right now.

  1. WAIT!! First of all, YAY for clear lymph nodes!! Just saw your precious post.

And now, YAY for having such a powerful advocate in your Mommy!! And ya know what? She knows you better than anybody and she knows you are a fighter! And she also knows you have your whole Tripawd Family cheering for you!! And that’s a lot of pawsitve energy we’re sending out to the Universe on your behalf!

Did they do a culture of the wound infection? Is she on any a antibiotics?

And here’s a little extra reassurance. Awhile baxk, my adopted Tripawd Frankie ate over 1,600 mg of Rimadyl as his dessert. He was in the hospital for over four days hooked up on IF to try and save his kidneys. Touch and go. YAY for IV fluids! Frankie’s trying to get in my lap roght now as I type this because his 70 lb butt is scared of thunder.

We’ll be watching for your updates.

    Extra hugs

  2. Thank you Sally, for the encouragement. I’m pretty scared and angry right now. I deleted a paragraph from this post where I expressed my anger with Dr. S for sending Belle home early for what I think was a financial decision, not a decision with Belle’s best interest at heart.

  3. Surrounding you with more hope and good thoughts. I know you want to yell, scream, pound, cry, and cuss. Please keep us up to date on how things go… and more than happy to be your sounding board 💖

    1. Oh, yes! I’m running the gamut of emotions right now. When I called the vet this afternoon, they said that she is doing “Great!” I’ll take that. If it continues like it has, she will come home on Saturday. I refuse to believe that this is anything more than complications from surgery and a sensitivity to all those meds. She will be fine!!!

  4. I don’t think she’ll be getting out tomorrow. Her kidneys are getting better, but now she has an infection. She’s septic. They are giving her IV Fluids and IV Antibiotics. I will not bring her home until my gut feeling is that she is out of the woods!

  5. GEEZ!!! Time for Murphy’s Law to take a hike!!!!

It IS good that her kidneys are showing improvement…really good!!

And IF antibiotics are usually very effective, so glad the have her on those.

If you don’t mind me asking, just curious about what they were using to treat the infection prior to this, and how did they finally realize she is septic? Not sure what I’m asking, other than how did this happen? A surgery infection?

Regardless, they’re giving her the IV antibiotic and that’s good!

You hang in there!!!!! We’re all cheering for your gal!!!

  6. Thank You!

Enroflaxin is the oral antibiotic that she’s on. I’m not sure what the IV antibiotic is. I just called. She has to stay the weekend. I’m sad.

  7. I am sorry. I know it sucks, but she is where she needs to be to kick this. They can keep her quiet and make sure she gets the meds she needs. I am so glad her kidney values are getting better, that is so important.
Please hang in there and let us know how she is doing.

  8. Thanks! The tech was working with her as we spoke. She said that Belle was looking at the phone. I’m sure she heard me. She (the tech) was going to take another CBC. I will call later and see how that turned out. She said that Belle is improving, but she doesn’t want to eat.

  9. Maube you could take her some warm chicken…jist tiny bites though. I remember the first time I FINALLY got Frankie to eat at the clinic, he wolfed it down, and immediately threw it back up! Too much too soon.

    Improving!! YAY FOR IMPROVING!😁
